FAQ’s about the Lactalite Breast Pumping Light Patrick O'Malley
What is Lactalite?
Lactalite is a small, attachable light source that connects to the tunnel portion of the breast shield while pumping. Lactalite helps ensure proper placement of the nipple within the flange of the breast shield. It is a hands free accessory that allows you to visualize your milk expression so that you can use manual expression or manage your speed and suction on your breast pump to maximize milk output. It also prevents you from having to turn on the overhead lights when pumping and allows for a better experience, especially for those middle of the night pumping sessions when you don’t want to wake a sleeping partner or baby.
Why was it developed?
Lactalite was created out of necessity. The inventor’s wife was sitting in the recliner when he came in and observed her using her cell phone LED light to better visualize her milk expression. We knew there was a better way, and that is why we created Lactalite!
Will the Lactalite work with my breast pump?
Probably so! Lactalite was designed to fit the majority of pump shields. We can ensure that it will fit the following brands:
It will not fit on Freemie. You may experience a tight fit for some Evenflo breast shields, as they are larger in diameter. Some other large and extra-large shields may also not be compatible.
What if I don’t have problems with seeing my milk flow and always pump in well lit areas?
Great question, and there are moms who are in that situation, for sure! Lactalite can help ensure proper placement of the nipple within the flange of the breast shield. It is a hands-free accessory that allows you to visualize your milk expression so that you can use manual expression or manage your speed and suction on your breast pump to maximize milk output. Having a light source shining directly on the tunnel portion of the breast shield can help improve your view when obscured by condensation and milk droplets.
Do I need your product if I am not pumping?
Only if you want to be the best friend/family member ever and get one for your friends and family who are pumping. This makes a wonderfully unique baby shower gift!
How many Lactalites come in each package?
Lactalites can be purchased as a single or in pairs. A single is $15 plus tax and shipping and a pair is $25 plus tax and shipping. Most women do pump both breasts simultaneously, so having two would be beneficial.
What makes Lactalite unique?
We have received great feedback from moms, and it usually starts out something like, “I have been using my cellphone light to see…” or “Why didn’t I think of this?!?” Well, that is why we created it!! We knew that many moms would benefit from having this breast pump light, and our aim is to make your pumping experience more enjoyable and less stressful.
Will the Lactalite help to increase my supply?
While we cannot claim a direct increase in supply with the Lactalite, we can say that breastfeeding or pumping is a “supply and demand” process. The more you express the more you will make. Better fit flanges, better placement of the nipple in the flange, and visualizing your milk expression so that you can manage your speed and suction controls to maximize milk output are all ways to maximize expression and help increase or maintain your milk supply. The Lactalite is a way to support all of these important functions. We hope to one day conduct a formal study and collect data to find this out and we will definitely share the results with you.
Why are there two different colors of light?
During the development process, we tried out several different lights. Our test groups had great interest in having both traditional white, as well as a blue light. The blue light is felt to be less distracting to others around them, but still allows visualization of your milk flow.
How long does the battery last?
In our own internal testing, the battery lasted over 100 hours. However, we did notice that the brightness started to fade around 80 hours.
What if my light doesn't seem bright enough?
On rare occasion, there might be a faulty battery. We recommend changing the battery with a brand new CR 2032.
How should I store my Lactalite?
You may store them in a cool, dry place. Make sure to keep out of reach of children because of the presence of a lithium button battery. They are not waterproof, so make sure to remove them from the breast shield prior to washing.
What if my nipple is being pulled into the tunnel and covering the light?
We recommend that you consult with your Lactation consultant to make sure you have the appropriate sized flange. Your nipple tissue should not be pulled that far into the tunnel as to cover the light.
